If you want to renovate or even completely rebuild your house (or another building) then you will need to call in demolition contractors. The team will be able to help you with anything from a bathroom strip to completely knocking your house down.

Different kinds of jobs will require different teams as they will need separate tools and skills. After all, taking down drywall in an office is a bit different to ripping up the floorboards or smashing through the wall completely!

A MINOR STRIP OUT

If you are just taking out drywall and wires then you can manage the project with a small team. You won’t really need any specialised tools, just hammers and wire cutters – and, in fact, this is the kind of thing you can do yourself if you are a handy person.

REMOVING FIXTURES

When you are getting fixtures taken out it gets a bit harder. This will usually be in bathrooms and kitchens, so you will need to get people with plumbing and electrical experience to help you. This doesn’t mean full plumbers and electricians, but the team you hire does need to know what they are doing with your pipes and wires.

In the worst case scenario you could end up with your bathroom absolutely flooded if the people taking out your toilet (or other water-heavy fixtures) make a mistake. For this reason you shouldn’t try and remove your sinks, showers and other water features yourself, nor should you hire inexperienced demolition contractors.

RENOVATION

For a big renovation you will need a big team. If you want to add another floor to your house, for example, you will need to completely remove your roof beforehand. This will affect your plumbing and electrical systems, as well as potentially your heating and other household networks like telecommunications lines.

You will need a team that contains experts in all of these areas to make sure the move back in is as smooth as possible after the renovation. You don’t want your plumbing, electrical wires, phone line or Wi-Fi network to go down without you knowing it until you move back home, after all! When you hire your demolition contractors you need to make sure that they know what they are doing.

FULL KNOCK-DOWN

A full knock-down of your house or other building for a rebuild will obviously need the biggest team and the most equipment. You will need digging equipment and excavators, as well as vehicles and people to take the smashed materials away and disposed of correctly (especially if they contain harmful materials such as asbestos).

On the plus side it doesn’t really matter if your team don’t know all the intricacies of plumbing and electrical writing because the house is being completely destroyed anyway. In a full knock down it is more important that your demolition contractors are good at working out the best way to bring the building down efficiently and in a way that preserves the foundations (if you still want them) as well as saves any materials that you can use in rebuilding.

As you can see, you will need to look for different things in your demolition contractors depending on the task you have for them. If you are just having basic work done then virtually anyone can help you with it, but if you are preparing for a more extensive renovation or even a complete rebuild then you will need to hire a team with the expertise and equipment to do the job properly.
